Psychedelics are back in the spotlight. But not as forbidden drugs. International studies are currently investigating their healing effects in the treatment of mental illnesses and addictions.
The number of patients diagnosed with mental illnesses, especially depression, is growing worldwide. There is an urgent need for new treatments as the pharmaceutical industry dosen't offer a convincing drug. But substances that for many years were demonized as something that drives us crazy bring hope: psychedelics. Recent studies already show that LSD and others have a therapeutic potential for mental illnesses and addictions. People are already talking about a "Psychedelic Renaissance" and the social interest is growing.
Will psychedelics be able to help those for whom nothing has helped? We follow patients who participate in one of the largest and most extensive studies on the therapeutic potential of psychedelics at the Charité Berlin and Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany. We witness not only how a new drug is being sought out, but also how a new therapeutic approach could be a paradigm shift in psychiatry.
