Just as the world seems to have COVID-19 under control… a new deadly microbe is literally in the air, killing 1.6 million people every year. Brace yourself for the attack of the killer fungi. Around the world, driven by climate change, multiple strains of deadly fungi are attacking and killing humans, dogs and cats. Fungal diseases globally kill upwards of 1,600,000 people a year. Some of these fungi are so dangerous you only have a 50% chance of surviving an infection. We now all know what a viral pandemic means and we know about the dangers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
We’ve secured exclusive access to the two main global research centres into these diseases – the Centre for Medical Mycology (CMM) at Exeter University and the Leibniz HKI research centre in Jena Germany.
This film follows the scientists from these global research centres who are racing to find the drugs to fight new fungal strains emerging all the time and save millions of peoples' lives. Killers like Candida Auris that's got a 50 per cent death rate in the vulnerable, or the mysterious cat disease in South America that is spreading to humans and the more established Valley Fever in California and Arizona which causes severe weight loss and drastic lung damage, even death. Despite the threats we are not doing enough to protect ourselves and drug companies shy away from the massive investment needed to research new drugs.
These two Centres are mankind’s best hope as we tackle and perhaps one day defeat the fungal killers. We see how the first successful breakthroughs against the killer fungi are working to save the lives of dogs suffering from "Valley Fever".
