Angola The War

The Angolan War, a largely unpublicized war, raged in South Western Africa between 1975-1989.The war began immediately after Angola became independent from Portugal in November 1975 and was a power struggle between two former liberation movements, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). The war was used as a surrogate battleground for the Cold War by rival states such as the Soviet Union, Cuba, South Africa and the United States. By the time the war ended over 500,000 people had died and a million Angolans had been displaced. Despite having the largest conventional battles of the Cold War as well as the biggest African tank battles since El Alamien, the Angolan War has remained a covert fragment hidden in the archives of history.
