Europe's Ancient Megasites: Mystery of a Lost Civilization

PLAY

6,000 years ago, it was a large, wealthy, and modern metropolis in the Eurasian steppe with over 10,000 inhabitants. But from one day to the next, the city mysteriously disappeared.

The inhabitants of these ancient megasites practiced intensive agriculture on fertile soils, developed crafts, and had a well-functioning social structure. Then, inexplicably, they burned down their houses and the megasites were abandoned. Did the inhabitants fall victim to a plague? Did the climate change so that they could no longer feed their inhabitants? Or did violence and wars lead to their decline? Through targeted excavations, an international research team is looking for answers.
